MY APPROACH TO COUNSELING
The mission of counseling is expansive. Does counseling address, improve, and eliminate symptoms? Of course it does, but it doesn’t stop there! Counseling heals and grows the entire person by increasing self-awareness, self-knowledge and self-acceptance. With counseling, people become much better equipped at dealing with life’s hardships, traumas and crushing disappointments but they become better able to love, work, and play. Their sense of personal freedom expands and they understand themselves, others and the world in more realistic and adaptive terms. These benefits increase even after counseling is over and last for the rest of the person’s life!
Our well being derives from the interaction of our biology and chemistry, our awareness of ourselves, family, social interactions, interface & influence with social systems and their institutional biases (education, law enforcement, health care, etc.), and the culture(s) and times in history in which we live. I enjoy assisting clients as they grow and learn, build new relational skills, work through various life challenges, and meet their own personal goals. My passion is to support clients to live a fulfilling life for themselves, knowing that this will look different from one individual to another. I believe all humans are of inherently equal value, but not everyone gets the same results or can access the same options in the systems in which we operate. I believe that being targeted for systemic oppression can amplify experiences of trauma, depression, & anxiety, & intersectional oppression can amplify this.
As a therapist I believe that everyone deserves a safe space for healing. All people deserve access to quality mental health care, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, identity, ability, sexuality, or socio-economic status. I am committed to being anti-racist in my work and an ally to the LGBTQIA community. I recognize the need for social justice to inform my work as a clinician and believe that addressing systemic racism and other forms of oppression are essential components of mental health for all.
I kindly and collaboratively help you clarify and explore your goals, hopes and dreams for your ideal life and self, and then make small (and big!) changes to move toward them. Together, we'll laugh and cry, analyze and understand. And together, we'll create a safe space for you to be yourself, heal, and thrive. I believe in providing a safe environment for my clients to express themselves without fear of judgment. It is my duty to provide services that encompass my ethics of treating my clients as human beings to be afforded respect, kindness, understanding, empathy, and equality in each session and interaction. It's my goal and honor to come alongside you, your child or adolescent, and your family, to support and empower you on your path to wholeness! More than any one technique, however, I offer you my being, my care, and my belief in you as the ultimate agent and expert of your own healing!
